Obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia, frankincense has been traded on the Arabian Peninsula and in Somalia for more than 5000 years. It was introduced to Europe by Frankish Crusaders in the 6th century. Known commonly as frankincense to westerners, the resin is also known as olibanum, the translation reads, “that which results from milking”, a reference to the milky sap tapped from the Boswellia tree.
